Last year we had a challenge, to play capoeira for 24h. The result… A SUCCESS…

We managed to hold a Roda for 24h without letting the Berimbau stop once. The roda started at 12pm on Saturday and ended at 12pm on Sunday.

Because of the huge success of our first event, we will be doing it again. And once again inviting every Capoeirista to come and participate in this one of a kind event, something you wont forget.

So this summer Saturday, August 14th we will be starting another 24h Roda at 12pm and ending it on Sunday, August 15th at 12pm.

The location: Street Dance Academy located at Queen and Spadina.

More details will come, so start getting ready for once again show you are up to this challenge and spend 24 hours amongst friends playing Capoeira.

Come and celebrate Axé Capoeira Toronto’s 5th Annual Batizado and Troca de Corda!

Roda de Rua 2010 takes place throughout Toronto for three days in August.
Capoeira students will have the opportunity to participate in capoeira workshops with internationally renown capoeiristas and Mestres. Friends, family and supporters are invited to join us for one of our public demonstrations as we take capoeira back to its roots on the streets of Brazil with exhilarating street performances throughout Toronto. Roda de Rua 2010 culminates in a high energy performance of capoeira, music, and traditional dance at the MacMillan Theatre (UofT) on August 8th.

A special week-long series of workshops, talks and rodas with Mestre Jogo de Dentro, from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Workshops will focus on the movements, strategy, music and ritual of Capoeira Angola. Capoeira Angola, sometimes called capoeira mãe or the mother capoeira, is often described as an older more African style of capoeira. Mestre Jogo de Dentro is a student of Mestre Joåo Pequeno, himself a student of Mestre Pastinha. Named, “Jogo de Dentro” by Mestre João Grande for his inside and close style of play, Mestre Jogo’s life is one of dedication to the study and teaching of Capoeira Angola around the world. He has several nucleuses of his group, Semente do Jogo de Angola in Brazil, Italy, and Canada. This is a unique opportunity to study with one of the great masters of Capoeira Angola and attend true rodas in the Angola style led by Mestre Jogo de Dentro.

So that time of the year came upon us again… Where we celebrate the date when Mestre Umoi made the decision and started Grupo Uniao na Capoeira.

Our students are going to be awarded their first Capoeira Cordao (belt) and others will receive their highier levels cordoes (bellts).

Our special guests from Brazil and CA: Master Lobao, Mestre Amem, Mestre Batata, Mestre Cabello e many other masters, contra mestres and professores are going to be present.

The workshops will start at 10 am until 3pm then we have our amazing CAPOEIRA RODA until 4:45pm and the Batizado starts at 5pm. ($15 fee for Batizado)

Latin Night will follow the event and the party starts at 9pm at 57 Olive ST New Haven.

NessaV - Aché (Album Cover)

Meet NessaV, a Canadian-born Brazilian raised in Vancouver, BC. NessaV has trained in a variety of dance styles including Samba, African, hip hop and Capoeira. She has a professor level in capoeira and just performed 19 shows for the Olympic Celebrations throughout Vancouver with Ache Brasil! She has traveled to Brazil to further her training in Capoeira and Brazilian music and began teaching Samba and Afro-Brazilian dance classes. She has performed live Capoeira demonstrations on MuchMusic, City TV’s Breakfast Television, YTV and innumerable events all over the world.

Since then, NessaV has toured the world with Aché Brasil as one of the group’s lead singers. It was this experience that led her to branch out on her own. Inspired to write and perform her own music, NessaV did just that and won first place in a songwriting contest—Music Against Racism Project 2008 – sponsored by Music BC. Writing and performing her own music has allowed NessaV to explore other genres and create a sound that is her own.

On June 3rd, 2010, NessaV will release her debut album – Aché. The word aché comes from the Yoruba language adopted by the Brazilian culture meaning “everything positive in the universe”. Aché was recorded between LA and Vancouver and features nine tracks that were co-written and co-produced by NessaV.

Brought these past two weeks, even though they were doing 3 shows a day they found the energy to stop by and share their knowledge with us.

I wish them all a good trip back home to Vancouver and hope that we have the opportunity to meet with them again sometime soon.

Stroll down any neighbourhood in downtown Toronto and you can see, hear, smell, taste and sense the evolution of community. Here, evolution is the dialogue between the traditional and the modern, the past, the present, the future, the old and the new, each in turn informing and dancing with the other. This special WinterCity concert series is an intimate South Asian themed spectacle of music and dance, connecting ancient India with contemporary Toronto. Chhandam Dance Company members perform highly exacting Kathak north Indian classical dance in its traditional form, set in an environment of Indian splendor.
A dialogue of rhythm, melodies and stories told by Ritesh Das and the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, singer Rosina Kazi, Laptop wizard Nic Murray, Bass player Ian de Souza and Kathak dancer Joanna de Souza, demonstrate the magic that can happen when a group of creative musicians set out to uncharted territory.
